Species Specificity:Human, cat, pig, rat, other vertebrates, also cartilaginous fish (Sciliorhinus stellaris).

General Information:Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) is a 28-amino-acid neuropeptide hormone. Its sequence is identical in man, ox, pig and rat. VIP is widely distributed in the central and peripheral nervous systems, acting as a neurotransmitter or neuromodulator. Peripherally it is involved in vaso- and bronchodilatation, smooth muscle relaxation and stimulation of secretion. Ectopic endocrine tumours secreting VIP (VIPomas) give rise to raised plasma levels of VIP and are associated with watery diarrhoea, hypokalemia and achlorhydria syndrome. VIP shows high sequence homology with peptide histidine-methionine (PHM) in humans and peptide histidine-serine (PHI) in pig or rat and is exprimed in the same precursor.

Positive control:Small intestine, ileum

Pre-treatment:Pre-treatment of paraffin material is not required, but enhanced staining may occur after application of high temperature unmasking (method not established).

Applications:IHC(C, P)

Incubation time:60 min at RT or 18 hr at 4 degrees C

Secondary reagents:We recommend the use of BIOLOGO's Universal Staining System DAB (Art. No. DA005) or AEC (Art.-No. AE005), if higher sensitivity is required VECTASTAIN Elite ABC (Art. No. PK-6102) or ABC AP (Art. No. AK-5002) systems are applicable.
